The challenge

Martinazzi Properties rents residential apartments and commercial space in the Portland, Oregon area. Applications used to mean paperwork, signatures on paper and separate payment of the application fee. The company needed a website that presents every property and lets applicants apply, sign and pay online, with a proper record of each application.

My contribution

Designed the whole website in Figma first, then built it in WordPress: the homepage, residential and commercial listings, a page for every property with its gallery, the contact pages and the application flow. I developed a custom plugin with separate residential and commercial application forms, including a digital signature, a generated PDF of each submitted application, and the application fee paid through WooCommerce with Stripe.

How it works

The residential application is a multi-step form split into nine tabs: personal information, current address, employment, additional occupants, vehicles, pets, emergency contacts, additional information and signature. Each tab is validated before the applicant moves on, including matching email addresses, and occupants, vehicles and pets can be added as repeating sections. On the last tab the applicant agrees to the terms and signs on a signature pad with a mouse, stylus or finger. The signature is captured as an image and submitted through AJAX together with the form. The plugin saves the application, generates a PDF document with all answers and the signature, and sends the applicant on to checkout, where the application fee is paid by card through WooCommerce and Stripe.

PROJECT FLOW / Application flow

A rental application from start to payment

  1. Complete nine steps

Validate details and add occupants, vehicles and pets.

  2. Sign the application

Capture a signature with a mouse, stylus or touch.

  3. Save and generate PDF

AJAX submits the answers and signature to the plugin.

  4. Pay the application fee

Continue to WooCommerce checkout with Stripe.

The PDF records the application. Payment is a later step, not an automatic approval of the applicant.

Forms, signature & payment

Residential and commercial applications are separate forms with their own fields and scripts. The signature pad resizes with the screen, can be cleared and redrawn, and blocks submission while empty. Every application ends up as a PDF the company can keep, print or forward, and payment runs through WooCommerce, so fees, receipts and orders are tracked in one place.

What it covers

Outcome

Applicants go from browsing a property to a signed, paid application in one visit, and the company receives a complete PDF record with the payment already handled.
